The name emerald
comes from the Greek 'smaragdos' via the Old French 'esmeralde',
and really just means 'green gemstone'. Innumerable fantastic
stories have grown up around this magnificent gem.Emerald
belongs to the gem family beryl. Colombia, Brazil, and Zambia
are the major producers, but there is an increasing shortage
of fine emerald, and producers are having trouble keeping up
with world demands. To judge the tone of a stone, examine it
face-up and look for areas of light and dark. Columbian
emerald is a deep green with a very slight blue undertone and
is considered the finest.Colombia
continues to be at the top of the list in terms of the
countries in which fine emeralds are found. It has about 150
known deposits, though not all of these are currently being
exploited. The best known names are Muzo and Chivor, where
emeralds were mined by the Incas in pre-Columbian times. In
economic terms, the most important mine is at Coscuez, where
some 60 faces are being worked. According to estimates,
approximately three quarters of Colombia's emerald production
now comes from the Coscuez Mine. Colombian emeralds differ
from emeralds from other deposits in that they have an
especially fine, shining emerald green unimpaired by any kind
of bluish tint. The colour may vary slightly from find to
find.
Zambian emeralds, though not as prevalent
in the market as those from Colombia or Brazil, are easy to
love and worth seeking out for their deep tones, clarity and
generally lower prices.Zambian emeralds also appeal to
retailers who prefer the purity of the crystal and look for
gems with fewer stress fissures or fractures radiating through
the stones.Another attraction is price – Zambian emeralds are
less expensive in the high-end ranges. But this much is clear:
prices are three to five times higher for Colombian emeralds
than for Zambian, a factor attributable to worldwide demand. All the Emerald Gemstones are
Lab Tested & Certified and Gem Certificate is also sent
with each order.
