Thailand's ruby mines inhabit a corner of the
country's eastern region, in Chanthaburi and Trat Provinces,
actually stretching across the border into the Pailin area of
Cambodia . They have been known from early times, the earliest known
reference being that of the Chinese traveller, Ma Huan, in 1408 ad.The
rural province of Trat in Eastern Thailand shares a long and
forested border with Cambodia. Until recently this border region was
most famed for its instability, its land mines and the intermittent
fighting of the Khmer Rouge. When Burmese rubies stopped reaching the
world markets in the 1960's due to the worsening political
situation, severe ruby shortages were experienced globally. Trat's
slightly darker and previously unloved rubies were now in high
demand. Ruby mining boomed in a feverish scramble to meet this
unfulfilled demand - and so did the local economy.
The more is the weight of the Ruby, the greater
is its effect.Ruby gemstone is found in Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka,
Kabul (Afghanistan), Tanganyika, China and South India.
