Vedic rituals are something
that have been of great spiritual importance to most of South Asia
and its neighboring areas like Indonesia and South-East Asia. The
people in these areas with varied beliefs have followed these
rituals for several millennia. Vedic rituals are today involved in
prayers and religious models followed in modern Hinduism. The
vedic rituals of Hinduism is divided into three categories;
actions done everyday called nitya, the actions done on special
occasions called naimittika and actions done voluntarily depending
on personal desire called kamya. All these three rituals are
performed by three types of rituals called yagna (having a
sacrificial fire), puja (offering devotional offerings like
flowers) and dhyana (meditation).
Though it is possible to
perform pujas both privately and publicly, it is the private pujas
to be done by individuals and families that are preferred. This is
because of the personal relationship the Hindu nurtures with the
divinity as a friend, parent or a supportive person. In addition
to all these vedic rituals, there are some rituals performed to
get a specific reward like a suitable life partner, conceiving a
child, to attain wealth and to ward off all negative outcomes of
life..
